GALATEA

According to Sigmund Freud's theory of castration, voyeurism and fetishism are two ways to alleviate the threat of castration imposed by women. Cameras and photographs facilitate voyeurism and fetishization as they function as extensions of our eyes, allowing us to observe and fetishize subjects. By erasing the faces in these photographs, viewers are prompted to reflect on their roles as voyeurs. Through the absence of an exchange of gazes between the viewers and the subjects in photographs, viewers can conceal their guilt and shame. The anonymity provided by not knowing one's identity becomes a convenient excuse for others to attack, disrespect, and suppress. This project addresses societal issue of violence through the medium of photography.
